THIS IS NOT ENGLAND

BY POULOMI BASU & CJ CLARKE

Hakim left Afghanistan for London to find peace and prosperity. Arriving in a neglected and multicultural area of London, Hakim proclaimed, “this is not England, this looks like a poor country.” Through this multi-channel installation we follow in Hakim’s footsteps as he explores London, looking for a reality that conforms to his idea of England.

With Brexit and the rise of the right, Hakim’s outsider perspective is an alternate prism to understand the psychopathology of migration, wars of aggression and the complexity of religious identity.

London is Hakim's labyrinth and, after his mysterious disappearance, we begin to understand what his vision reveals about his new home. He left to escape war but, as an illegal-immigrant, what does he actually find? Peace or something much more sinister?
